How to Paint Furniture (Black with Shiny finish)?
I have little knowledge of carpentry (or painting for that matter). I bought plywood (5/8 thick) and have it cut to my liking so i can make me self a table for me small room...
I want to paint it black. I'm just wondering what materials/procedure do i use/follow to have a nice shiny, lacquer finish?
P.S. I will be using it as a computer table (office)
I would suggest that you paint the wood with primer first. You can have the primer tinted to 1/4 the finish color. For instance, If the finish paint needs 1oz. of black pigment then the primer will take 1/4oz of the black pigment. The paint store can easily mix this for you.
Using the primer first will give you a more even black finish coat.
You might even want to prime with 2 coats to cover completely. It will appear gray.
Then you are ready for the top coat.
I like Olympic and Valspar. Both can be found at Lowes and other stores.
I would use and exterior high gloss. It will stand up better on a desk than interior.
Olympic has a color "Black Magic" D58-6
Valspar has a few blacks. "Very Black" 5011-2 is one of them.
I would go with latex only, NO oil base paint. Latex works as well. Is low odor, not toxic like oil base and dries quickly.
For the primer, you may need more than a quart so I would buy a gallon to be sure. About $15-18.
For the finish coat, you will want 2 coats. Will probably need more than a quart there too. You could start with 1 quart and see if you have enough for 2 coats.
If not, then stop after the first coat and go buy another quart.
Quarts run about $10.-12. and gallons about $30-35.
Allow the finished desk to dry for a few days or more before using it. Paint dries quickly but actually takes almost 30 days to fully cure and harden. Since you will be placing objects on it, the more dry time, the better.
Price it out and see what's the best deal.
I used exterior latex Valspar on my garage this Summer and was extremely pleased with the application and finshed look.
Get a good quality brush for this job. Can also be found at Lowes. Expect to pay $8-10. for a 2" brush. Use this for the edges, legs and around legs where they attach to the table. Use a roller for the rest.
To roll on the finish coat and primer, get 2 roller covers, 1 roller handle. 1 paint try and 2 paint tray liners.
Remember use latex, not oil.
